WHY?
Popcorn in scouting does a few things. First and foremost, FUNDRAISING! This is the primary way that most Scout Units have their money to operate. All of the $150 annual dues goes to the scouting organization at a higher level. Our Pack is funded by Popcorn and donations of time or goods for meetings for probably 95% of the Pack 99 costs. 70% of the total sales stays local, and about a third goes to our pack specifically.
Popcorn has also shown valuable for helping kids learn valuable skills. Door to door sales really help them get some exposure to actively engaging with something and I have heard several parents say that they have seen a difference in their child due to the experience.
Storefronts have made a difference for my sons in showing that they need to be persistent, and learning that being told "No Thanks" is not a problem. Reminders to stay engaged, make eye contact, and keep the cub scout motto (Do your best), really can make a difference. Talking with them to say "Thanks anyway" regardless, and with the right attitude, turned a few into yes, and living through that really makes an impact.
